Hi Lee& all,

at the Central Park Reservoir, 10:30 a.m. this Tues. (April 1) I saw &
photographed 3 swans, which on first glance looked to have nice
'gestalt' for something other than Mute... but on closer look & now
double-checking photos to be sure, the swans appear to be 3 Mute (and
not Tundra or another, uncommon or rare species). Points in favor of
Mute (I believe, swan-sters may add their expertise) are the longish
(for a swan) & pointy tails, & the bill coloration on all - orangish-
red, with minimal black at the base, and black extending to the points
in front of the eyes and above the bill, as well as particularities of
the pattern of black & red in the bill - all point to Mute & not the
other possibilities in swans... (please add further thoughts & check
it out as well, if you are in or going to Central Park.)

Of course these may not be the 100 St. & Hudson river 3 swans, but...

worth a look for anyone passing the reservoir; when seen they were at
about W. 88 St., inside the reservoir's western side. Also still
lingering is the Red-necked Grebe (more towards the n. side quite
often), and a pair of Red-breasted Mergansers. A quick look in the
Ramble did not reveal a lot of newly-arrived migrants for me, but
other birders are out & about now.

good birding,
