On August 7, the Eastern Long Island Audubon Society has been honored by
being asked to hold our monthly General Meeting at the R/H/S, during it's
exhibition of Dennis Puleston's many faceted, long life (95 very,
productive years), with the world continuing to benefit by his
accomplishments. An example being his effort to help secure a nationwide
(USA) ban on the use of pesticides (DDT), thereby helping to save his
favorite bird, the Osprey.

Dennis was a co-founder and first chairman of the Environmental Defense
Fund, as well as co-designer of the DUKW, a vehicle that operated on both
water and land, and was an important part of our success in the pacific
during WW 2. His early experience at sea, written about in Blue* Water
Vagabond, *helped him in this endeavor

Dennis was a member of ELIAS (it was named Moriches Bay A/S back then)
and still holds the record for programs given by an individual to our
chapter, 32. When he would get back from one of his trips as a naturalist
aboard a Lindblad Cruise, we got a program, ie, Antarctica, The Arctic, The
Northwest Passage, Papua New Guinea, The Seychelles, etc. Dennis was a real
Renaissance Man - just Google his name, and you'll be impressed...if you
haven't heard of him already. In fact, many on this listserve might
remember him as the banquet speaker (Antarctica) when the then named MBAS,
hosted the 1st of 2 annual meetings for the then named FNYSBC - I wonder
how many of you still have the small Penguin "plush" that was given out to
all, as a memento.

I'm sorry for this very late post, but for those who cannot attend tonight
(7:15PM), this exhibit runs through September, 28.
