As part of Putnam County breeding bird survey Kyle Bardwell and I made a few stops early saturday in Fahnestock St. Park (campground and Pelton Pond) and a bit on red trail off 301 then at Stonecrop Garden also on Rte 301 and joined by Charlie Roberto for a few hours at Glynwood Farm including on the State park yellow cedar ridge trail (that has easement though farm--close all gates if hiking it) -- besides finding many chestnut sided warblers that several posts indicate are missing this year from doodletown and sterling forest, highlights:
from Fahnestock Warblers: Canada, blackburnian, N. waterthrush, blackthroated green, yellow, common YT, redstart; also heard bb cuckoo, wood thrush, veery, red eyed vireo (the latter two ubiquitous), phoebe, E wood pewee, scarlet tanager (pair) At Stonecrop: cerulean good looks at male singing, also worn eating on road in, wood thrush and many barn swallow, chipping sparrows At glynwood farm and meadows of yellow trail: 48 purple Martins they are breeding successfully for third year in a row this is approx adult / sub adult population - the houses/gourds being well cared for so perhaps will be up to 100 birds by end of season (anyone know of martins breeding elsewhere in Putnam or Westchester)? Lots of tree swallows, many bobolinks, kestrel (breeding), RS hawk (3), Cooper's hawk, YT vireo (pair), scoped looks at bb cuckoo (pair) and RB grosbeak, indigo bunting several, willow flycatcher, and in meadow on yellow trail a few blue winged warbler, one brewster's seen by Kyle and at least 6 chestnut sided warblers; had to be 30 yellow warblers in the farm/ yellow trail area No unusual sparrows. We heard the cacophony of cicadas most of the day but no Kites-- but I did run into Steve Sachs at the Clearwater Festival in the afternoon and got to see his outstanding swallow tailed kite pictures from Saturday morning along the Palisades along w some great music L.
