A relatively brief lunchtime walk through Prospect Park revealed many overdue warblers and other songbirds. While last weekend's birding in Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park combined for a paltry seven species of warbler (and absurdly low abundance of everything), my mostly damp walk in Prospect today finally broke the warbler double-digit mark at 16. The North end of the Midwood forest was ringing with birdsong as I counted 9 species of wood-warbler in this spot alone. I normally wouldn't expect to hear much singing at midday, so I'm thinking that the cloud cover and drizzle lulled the birds into thinking that it was still early. Once the sun came out the symphony subsided quite a bit. I didn't see or hear anything really unusual, but was just really glad to have experienced some normal Spring songbird activity. Like a lot of folks, I was beginning to worry that it would be the year "Spring Migration Missed New York City".
