While walking down Edgemere Park road to the landfill, Alie Ratay, Bob
Washburn and I flushed a likely 1st year CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW from the north side
of the road at the open chain-link gates to the bayside parking area. Adding
details here if anyone is interested in finding later today.
When it first flushed, we saw it was dark rufous all over. It landed on the
other side of the road behind some stacked concrete barriers. There it faced
away from us and showed a solid dark tail as it fanned its tail feathers. It
took off again and flew across the road into the woods and we could not
relocate it. In flight, we could not discern any white or grey in the outer
tail feathers, and its wings appeared solid without any hint of grey in the
shoulders. Size-wise, it felt larger than a robin.
Edgemere Landfill is on the Rockaways. From Beach Channel Drive, turn left
on Beach 51st street and continue on it until it ends at Edgemere Park road.
Turn left and you'll pass the gates where the bird was seen. The road ends at
small parking lot.

Good luck if you go,
