Despite the chilly weather, there was a nice assortment of early spring migrants and winter resident species at Hempstead Lake State Park (HLSP) this morning. Upon arriving at the HLSP parking lot, I heard a Common Raven calling, and discovered a pair in the roadway east of the parking lot sampling a road kill. They subsequently flew off north through the picnic area. Other birds of note included Wood Duck (2), Eastern Phoebe (1), Tree Swallow (6), and Rusty Blackbird (2). Additional birds observed were Pied-billed Grebe, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Fox Sparrow (singing). I also recorded my first Yellow-rumped Warblers (3) away from the beach.
The Red-necked Grebe continues at Captree State Park, and is starting to acquire a tinge of red on the breast.
