Just want to thank all of you who wrote me with data, suggestions, and
other comments.  Yes, it does appear that my friend in NH heard a
Black-capped Chickadee, not an Eastern Phoebe -- an honest mistake.

I hope you've found the discussion as interesting as I have, however.
 While my friend probably did not have a phoebe, a lot of what I've read
from you all suggests that overwintering (or lingering or early) phoebes
can be and have been seen in almost any month.

Anything's possible, which is why I always take reports seriously, even
from amateurs.

P.S. I swear I wasn't just trying to make you all do the research for me!
