I put in 2.5 hours at Heckscher State Park this morning (8:00-10:30) looking for the Clay-colored Sparrow found by Arie Gilbert yesterday. Starting at field 6 I traveled east as far as the RC model plane airfield. Other than a flock of ~50 Juncos near the airfield I saw few sparrows until I was 2 hours in and had returned to the vicinity of the pool complex. There I encountered 8-9 American Tree Sparrows along the east fence of the pool, followed by the real mother lode--a flock of 25-30 Tree Sparrows, 6-7 Field Sparrows and 4 outlying Savannah Sparrows--on the west side of the pool. I followed and carefully observed that flock for 20-25 minutes but never saw the Clay-colored. The visit was not without rewards though, as both White-winged and Red Crossbills were seen as were my FOY Killdeer and Great Egret.
