This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 28th 2012 at 8pm. The highlights of today's tape are AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, AMERICAN AVOCET, BLACK-HEADED GULL, MANX SHEARWATER, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, BLUE GROSBEAK, LARK SPARROW and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. A good mix of birds for the week was probably still topped by the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continuing on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at least to Tuesday. The pelican usually found between the Raunt and the island at the north end of the pond. Some shorebirds still residing at the south end of the East Pond include a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and 5 STILT SANDPIPERS along with PECTORAL and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS among others. Equally as interesting were 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS seen by a boater in Great South Bay on both the 16th and last Sunday. The avocets frequenting marshes south of Seaford. It may be one of these 2 avocets that also was present at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area roosting in the marsh on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Also noteworthy was a BLACK-HEADED GULL, by description, roosting with other gulls at the north end of Randall's Island in the East River last Saturday. An impressive number of BLUE GROSBEAKS has been noted this week. One appeared at the north end of Central Park Tuesday, another was present in Prospect Park Brooklyn today and 2 have been in Kissena Park in Queens since Tuesday with one there earlier. Another was spotted at All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village in Queens on Sunday joining a CONNECTICUT WARBLER there. CONNECTICUTS have also been showing up nicely recently including one seen by many in Central Park's Ramble last Sunday and sightings of singles today at Stuyvesant Town off East 16th Street in Manhattan and the community garden at Floyd Bennett Field and at Kissena Park where a COMMON NIGHTHAWK also flew by. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER visited Prospect Park Thursday, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was on Staten Island Wednesday and other migrants have featured YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a continuing variety of warblers, numbers of LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and such arriving species as YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, BROWN CREEPER and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. LARK SPARROW found Saturday around the upper parking lot at Captree State Park was still present there Sunday and perhaps the same bird was in the median opposite field 2 at Robert Moses State Park on Tuesday. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was near the Moses Park hawk platform last Sunday and a VESPER SPARROW appeared at Jones Beach West End on Monday. Lots of NORTHERN GANNETS have also been off the south shore of Long Island recently. The summering GLAUCOUS GULL at Smith Point County Park in Shirley was seen around the parking lot Sunday and Thursday and both ROYAL and CASPIAN TERNS were reported there during the week. Two WHIMBREL and 10 ROYAL TERNS were at Shinnecock last Sunday with a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Mecox their numbers now seemingly down from the recent coastal influx along the south shore. Birds at Amagansett Saturday featured GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, CAPE MAY WARBLER and a BLUE GROSBEAK and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was spotted at the Teddy Roosevelt County Park in Montauk Saturday. Landbirds at Montauk Point recently included an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER as well as a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at Camp Hero on Tuesday with an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER seen Sunday. Offshore a few shearwaters included a MANX Saturday off Camp Hero along with 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 4 GREAT SHEARWATERS off Camp Hero on Sunday and also seen from a boat off Montauk on Monday and a CORY'S SHEARWATER from the point on Tuesday.
