I birded the park over the last 4 days. Three lunch hours and an extended stay on my half-day Friday before, during & after the storm. Four and 5 species were seen during the lunch hours with 6 seen on Friday including a local PEREGRINE FALCON, a continuing female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT & several WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS including at least 1 singing throughout the time I was there.
EUROPEAN STARLING was seen only on Thursday. This species has been seen on only 15% of my visits to the park. Peregrine sightings are higher at 25%. The relative lack of Starlings in Bryant Park may be one of the reasons why species diversity is above average for such a small park. The 3 plus hour visit on Friday saw only 1 warbler species which is a continuing female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT seen mainly on the south side of of the Great Lawn and in the SE storage area near the eastern entrance to the park on 40th St. A pair of GRAY CATBIRDS continues. Both were seen together in a garden in the northwest corner and along the south edge of the Great Lawn. One the catbirds has a light colored stress bar on its tail about midway across its width. None of the recent finds have been spotted but there is a chance they may have eluded detection. These include: *Species / Last Reported On *Northern Waterthrush / Sat., 16-Jun Mourning Warbler / Sat., 16-Jun Wilson's Warbler / Fri., 15-Jun Ovenbird / Wed., 13-Jun Hope to hear of more sightings over the summer. eBird.org has only 5 species listed for the month of July<http://ebird.org/ebird/GuideMe?src=changeDate&getLocations=hotspots&hotspots=L683555%2CL1011045&parentState=US-NY&reportType=location&monthRadio=on&bMonth=07&eMonth=07&bYear=1900&eyear=2012&continue.x=44&continue.y=12&continue=Continue> .
