Went looking for the painted bunting this morning between 7:30 and 8:30.  At
the intersection of Rte 104 and Scrub Oak Road in Quogue, there was no bird
life at all.  Drove the adjoining streets and found no birds.  The sun was
still low in the sky, hadn't warmed up yet.  This is a heavily wooded area and
is difficult to see if there are any active feeders anywhere.  As you might
suspect, many houses are second homes and are deserted this time of year.  The
Quogue Wildlife Refuge is less than a mile away from the intersection and the
feeders were jumping with the usual suspects.  There was one interesting spot
on Midhampton Road just south of the RR tracks.  It looks to be a deserted
parking lot of the old Quogue LIRR station.  There are weedy areas on both
sides of parking lot.Mike Higgiston
