A SNOWY OWL was present today in the dunes around the western side of the West End 2 parking lot at Jones Beach State Park. As is the norm in recent years, the bird was repeatedly flushed by photographers. Hopefully it will stay despite the persistent disturbance. At Point Lookout, a single male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen flying out of the inlet. At Jamaica Bay today, an AMERICAN AVOCET was on the East Pond, and the EARED GREBE was still in the bay south of the West Pond (thanks to the Brooklyn Bird Club). A BARN OWL was seen late in the day.
For those interested in chasing exotics, the previously reported EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH was at Caumsett State Park on Saturday, around the east side of the field south of the stables. Also there was a PINE WARBLER and about a dozen EASTERN BLUEBIRDS. Thanks to Corey Finger and Mary Normandia for making the birding even more enjoyable.
