Sue and I spent Tuesday morning conducting a breeding bird survey at Caumsett
State Park. It was a warm day and bird song was light after 9:00AM.
Nevertheless, we recorded 62 species for the morning. Highlights included an
Eastern Meadowlark on territory in the western fields; two tardy Atlantic Brant
on the shore of Long Island Sound(LIS); a Great Horned Owl hooting at 9:00AM; a
total of twenty American Redstarts calling on "Redstart Road", the main
east-west vehicle trail that parallels LIS; an Acadian Flycatcher calling in
the woods west of Fresh Pond; and a total of 55 Yellow Warblers, a species that
seems to be everywhere this year.

On the negative side we failed to record a single Carolina Wren in a location
that has been a traditional stronghold for the species. No Brown Thrashers were
observed, although they seem to be doing well on the barrier beach at West End
and RMSP.
