As many have heard, the MISSISSIPPI KITE(s), is/are back at the nest site as
in last year; near the intersection of Donato and Mapletown Roads, in the
Town of Root (Ames), Montgomery County, NY.

If you are interested in seeing them, you might want to keep in mind that
their pattern is similar to that of about this time of the season as in the
past.

That is, that the adult(s) tend to stay away at parts unknown for very long
periods of time. And, when they do show up, they are usually interested in a
flying a direct line to the nest and quickly disappear. So, same as in past
years, unless you are very lucky, be prepared to wait a very long time
before getting a brief glimpse of the bird(s).

On the other hand, once the young hatch out, if past patterns hold, the
parents will be more active around the nest site and visible more often for
extended periods as they often catch dragonflies in the air; a beautiful
show in itself.

If/when that happens, we will keep the lists updated.

Also, keep in mind good neighborly manners. Some residents have asked that
their privacy be respected and trespassing will not be tolerated. Donato
Road is narrow with little opportunity to pull off to the side with out
blocking traffic. Please be courteous and thoughtful and try to keep any
disruption to their daily routine to a minimum. We've come a long way with
neighbor relations up there. But, not all appreciate the focus of attention
the birds have brought to their quiet corner of the world. Smile, wave, and
be nice. You may get the same in return.

Please also, if you go, report sightings of the kites and any other species
observed while there. Use www.ebird.org or the local listserves as vehicles
to share and to keep track of the area's bird populations.
