Hempstead Lake SP 6 April

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo, Pat Jones and I (Sy Schiff) birded the stream north
and south of paring lot #3 . Today was the first influx of spring birds and an
interesting mix.

Continuing were WOOD DUCK, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, with AMERICAN COOT and
RING-NECKED DUCK in Smith Pond.

Woodpeckers were represented by the 5 common species, DOWNY, HAIRY,
RED-BELLIED, SAPSUCKER and FLICKER. Both TREE and BARN SWALLOWS were over Smith
Pond. BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and EASTERN PHOEBE were our FOY. The wintering
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET continues.

Warblers were represented by 5 species:--ORANGE-CROWNED (not seen by all); 6-8
PINE, 3 PALM, YELLOW-RUMPED and an early BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. Also early
was a WHITE-EYED VIREO.

Joe and I headed to Jones Beach West End where we found our FOY KILLDEER. The
dunes in front of the Nature Center had a large group of DUNLIN and
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER. Also, a number of (probably nesting) HORNED LARKS.
