Yesterday, after I left Rob Stone and Bob Cotter, Rob found EIGHT Greater
White-fronted Geese at the Camel Farm just off lower road near Pine Island. He
shortly found a ninth GWFG at the Turf Nursery. (a definate record!) I couldn't
go back, but went down first thing this morning. There were tremendous numbers
of geese in the area. At the Camel Farm, I found at least five thousand
(5,000) Canada Geese and one Blue-phase Snow Goose. I then went to the Turf
Nursery where I found six thousand (6,000)Canada Geese, three thousand five
hundred (3,500)Snow Geese, four GREATER WHITE-FRONTED Geese and one CACKLING
GOOSE. Waves of geese filled the air in every direction. I can only guess at
the total numbers of geese in the black dirt region of the county. The geese
soon took off from the Turf Nursery and went in several directions. Later Ken
McDermott and Dan (?) arrived and I was able to find three of the GWFG at the
sod farm next to the Golf Course around the corner from the Jolly Onion Inn.
Even later I returned to the Camel Farm to find what I believe was at least
10,000 Geese. These included one hybrid Goose, one GWFG (immature bird), one
Leucistic Canada Goose and the Blue Phase Snow Goose. Five Greater
White-fronted Geese in one morning, not bad. Thanks to Rob Stone for alerting
us to these birds. John Haas
