On Monday morning at Montauk Pt. there were abundant birds, but little variety.
Highlights were the continuing Scoter spectacle off the Point. I did not
estimate the number of birds, although Surf Scoter seemed the most abundant
followed by White-winged and Black Scoters. Fifty-three Razorbills were seen,
mostly flying birds. A second winter Iceland Gull was on the shoreline by the
restaurant when I first arrived. On the south side of the Point east of Camp
Hero State Park I encountered a calling female White-winged Crossbill that
alighted in a Red Cedar long enough to enjoy good scope views. I missed the
Northern Shrike that had been observed Sunday at Napeague, but with some
assistance from two other birders, found the male Barrow's Goldeneye west of
Sag Harbor. Hook Pond was completely frozen and few birds were present. The
same conditions existed at Short's Pond. Cooper's Neck Pond had some open water
and held small numbers of Canvasback, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Merganser and Ruddy
Duck.

On Dune Road there were two American Bitterns and a Clapper Rail west of Tiana
Beach.
