In a post to the New Jersey list, Paul Guris summarized a 1-day fishing trip
out of Belmar (northern NJ) in which they observed 24 COMMON MURRE (a new
state record), 1 THICK-BILLED MURRE, an adult ATLANTIC PUFFIN and 3 DOVEKIE
as well other winter species including Humpback Whale. Not bad for a winter
fishing trip!

Of course, this is very encouraging news for those signed up for the
dedicated 8-hour pelagic birding trips scheduled for next weekend (Belmar NJ
on Saturday and Freeport NY on Sunday). There are a few slots left on each
boat, and I would encourage you to make reservations now if you want to join
us. I will be one of the guides on the Freeport boat, which is being run in
conjunction with NYC Audubon (member discount). Birding orientated trips are
often able to fairly close to the birds and generally give much better views
than fishing trips. We also tend to cover a larger area and thus encounter
more birds overall. The waters due south of Jones Inlet (Freeport boat) have
typically been very good for alcids at this time of year. Full details of
these and other trips can be found on Paul's 'See Life Paulagics' web site.
