This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 17th, 2010 at 11:30 pm. The highlights of today's tape are SORA, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, WHIMBREL, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, BLUE GROSBEAK, and DICKCISSEL. A sub-adult SORA was found at the Lullwater area at Prospect Park, Brooklyn on Tuesday. AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were reported last week as follows: 30 at the sod field at Sound Avenue and Route 105 in Riverhead last Saturday and 15 at the same site on Sunday; 15 at Cooper Road in Shoreham on Sunday; 3 at the swale area at Jones Beach West End last Saturday; and a single bird at Robert Moses State Park last Saturday and again today. Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS and a WHIMBREL were reported at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island last Saturday, and another WHIMBREL was seen at the sand bar at the Coast Guard Station at West End Jones Beach on Monday. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was present Sunday and Monday at the swale at West End Jones Beach and another was seen at the golf course at the Cedar Beach Jones Beach strip Sunday, along with a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. Other BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS reported last week were: 5 at the sod fields on Cooper Road in Shoreham on Sunday; two at the soccer field at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn on Sunday, and four there on Thursday. Three OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were reported last week: one at Sunken Meadow State Park last Saturday; another in Central Park last Saturday and again in Central on Wednesday. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was briefly seen today near parking field 2 on Fire Island. A WORM-EATING WARBLER was among 25 species of warblers reported in Central Park last Saturday that included TENNESSEE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, and HOODED WARBLER, plus a PHILADELPHIA VIREO. A single CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found near the volleyball court adjacent to parking field 2 at Robert Moses State Park, Fire Island, on Thursday, and two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at the same site today. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was present there on both days. Three BLUE GROSBEAKS were found Wednesday at Robert Moses State Park, and another bird was reported there Thursday at the volleyball court, parking field 2. A DICKCISSEL, two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS and a LINOLN'S SPARROW were found around the perimeter of parking field 2 at Robert Moses State Park on Tuesday. Hawk migration is well underway, with most hawk watch sites reporting good results. One example is the watch at the Greenwich Audubon Center in Greenwich, CT, where on Wednesday 4300 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were counted along with a remarkable 30 BALD EAGLES. Other BALD EAGLES reported last week were six in Central Park last Saturday, one on Monday at Jones Beach West End, and one near the Meadowbrook Parkway toll booth at Jones Beach on Tuesday. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS appeared at their peak migratory period in our area. At Robert Moses State Park, one bird was reported on Sunday, two adults and one immature on Monday, and one adult at parking field 2 on Thursday.
