On our way home from JBWR we stopped at West End 2 about 1:00PM to see what
shorebirds may be present. At the WE2 Marina there were boaters on the sandbar
with a dog, besides about forty Oystercatchers there was not much to see. At
the swale south of the pavilion we observed approx. 600 Semipalmated Plovers,
with smaller numbers of Piping Plover (10), Semipalmated Sandpiper (50), Ruddy
Turnstone (4), Sanderling (10), Black-bellied Plover (5), and Short-billed
Dowitcher (1). As would be expected given the lack of rainfall and coastal
storms, the swale was bone dry. However, we are well within the arrival dates
for Baird's Sandpiper and they should be looked for in the grassy areas of the
swale.
