Saturday morning, Nov. 28, on the Chemung Valley Audubon Society field trip
along the Chemung River in downtown Elmira, we caught three glimpses of a
warbler which, after considering other possibilities and pooling what we had
seen on our very brief sightings, concluded was a Yellow Warbler. I found
the bird for one more brief, but good viewing Sunday afternoon at about 4
p.m. Because of the apparent lack of streaks and wingbars, I think that the
bird is an immature female. The only field mark to go with the pale yellow
underparts and greenish upperparts is the prominent yellowish eye-ring. All
of the sightings were in Riverfront Park, along East Water Street and east
of the Clemens Center Parkway. The bird was first seen diving into a Yew
hedge. Then it was seen in the middle of a leafless Paper Birch.
Yesterday, we last saw it about 15 feet from the top of a 50-foot evergreen
-- a Douglas-fir, I think. Sunday, it was foraging in the group of Red
Pines immediately east of the Clemens Center Parkway bridge. This probably
constitutes the latest sighting of a Yellow Warbler in Chemung County.

Other highlights of the trip were a Common Raven, a Cooper's Hawk, an adult
Bald Eagle, an immature Bald Eagle, and a male American Black Duck paired
with an wing-injured female Mallard.
