This morning I found a "Richardson's" cackling goose in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens County. The bird was with Canada geese and brant, in a basin just south of Citifield. To reach the spot, from the Van Wyck Expwy (I-678) exit off the Long Island Expwy, head north on College Point Blvd., less than 1/10 mile, to the first traffic light. Turn left into the park. Proceed a short distance under the Van Wyck, and turn right on the park loop road. Proceed about 1/4 mile. You'll see a gray building with a roof support structure that looks like a suspension bridge. The basin will be on your left. You can park near the building, under the Van Wyck. There was also a flock of about 25 American pipits there, strangely favoring an astroturf soccer field amidst all the real grass.

A belated report from last Sunday, November 8: I found 2 drake Eurasian wigeon on Patchogue Lake, in Patchogue. The lake can be accessed from the apartment complex at its southwest corner. A horned grebe was also somewhat out of place there, and I saw 19 species of waterfowl in a sweep of freshwater ponds in western Suffolk and Nassau.
