A good fall migration was observed this morning at Robert Moses State
Park, with streams of Yellow-rumped Warblers, Northern Flickers,
Eastern Phoebes, Cedar Waxwings, and Robins making up the bulk of the
flight. Other birds present in good numbers were Ruby-crowned Kinglet,
Palm Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat.
There were two Clay-colored Sparrows present at the beach volleyball
field at the east end of RMSP Field 2. Shai Mitra observed a
Connecticut Warbler from the area of the toll booths at the entrance
to RMSP Field 2. A subsequent search of the area for the bird was
unsuccessful. Gilgo Beach had some activity, but nothing of note. At
West End 2 in the late morning and early afternoon there were three
Royal Terns on the sandbar on the north side of Jones Inlet. A
Dickcissel briefly called from the east end of the WE2 marina parking
lot. A Lincoln's Sparrow was feeding near the bayberry on the west
side of the entrance road to the WE2 Coast Guard Station. An adult Red-
headed Woodpecker was reported from the WE2 parkway turnaround but
could not be relocated. All in all a good (and overdue) morning of
birding.
