Around 5 PM on a low tide there were 5 Brown Pelicans seen by me, Bob May, and
Jimmy Cullen. They were in groups of 2 and 3, joining together as the tide came
in, then flying west towards the inlet. A Caspian Tern appeared around 5:30,
then an adult Black Tern with white spotting on the head and breast, and a
juvenile Forster's Tern among the many mostly adult Common Terns. Also present
were Black Skimmers and Least Terns, but no Royals, Roseates, or rarities.
Shorebirds were the usual suspects - SB Dowitchers - 2 races -, Dunlin, Red
Knot, Semi & BB Plovers, Sanderlings in breeding plumage, Least & Semi
Sandpipers. Just as more birds were arriving around 6:30 the Suffolk County
helicopter arrived to spray the marsh scaring off everything. The Caspian Tern
was found a short while later at nearby Pike's Beach
