Hi folks,

Apologies again for the last minute cancellation of our lightning talks event
last month. The good news is you now have a second crack at the whip to give a
lightning talk at NWRUG!

If you don’t know what a lightning talk is, it’s a short (2 to 10 minute) talk
on any topic that might be of interest to the group. For an idea of the sort of
things we’re talking about, check out our previous

Giving a lightning talk at NWRUG
Giving a lightning talk is a great way to try your hand at public speaking, and
we encourage and support first time speakers. Lightning talks don’t have to be
super-polished, or particularly ground-breaking. It could simply be sharing an
interesting or surprising thing you’ve learnt recently. If you’re thinking
about giving a lightning talk this month, drop us a line at i...@nwrug.org
<mailto:i...@nwrug.org>.

We're very happy to help with advice and help on things like: what to talk
about; how to structure your talk; rehearsals; or anything else you might need
to help you prepare and feel comfortable giving a short talk. There is also a
short advise for speakers <https://nwrug.org/participate#speaking-at-nwrug>
section here on the website.

As Ben put it last month, doing a talk can help with:
new opportunities - I've learnt from personal experience that doing stuff in
public (running events, giving talks, launching side projects, attending
events) can trigger interesting opportunities.
hiring - come along, share some knowledge, give value to the community. We've
seen over the years that companies that are involved with NWRUG find it easier
to hire.
knowledge sharing - sharing knowledge with the community helps to strengthen it
and make it more valuable to be a part of.

NOTE: Change of venue

MadLab are now running their community activities out of PLANT NOMA
<https://www.plantnoma.com/> so that’s where we’ll be from this month. PLANT is
a short walk from MadLab in the Redfern building on Dantzic Street:

More details on the collaboration between MadLab and PLANT NOMA here
<https://madlab.org.uk/2018/04/madlab-and-plant-noma-announce-new-collaboration/>.

We’ll be there from 6:30pm, with the talks starting at 7pm.

See you there,

Tekin
