I think the simple answer is, Rails has the features and Merb has  
better performance.  Merge them and you get the best of both.

A monoculture?  Hell no, there's plenty of frameworks that are trying  
to spring out of the ether, this will just make it more competitive as  
they'll actually have to have some basis for their existence.  Good  
example: Sinatra.  It has genuine appeal and stands out with the  
lightweight abilities it offers.
