I know this is an old post, but I've just set up a backup procedure to  
Amazon S3 using the backup_fu plugin and I have to say, I'm impressed!  
Really simple to configure and works like a dream. Backing up static  
files is just as easy. The only thing it doesn't do is automatically  
clean up old backups from S3, but that shouldn't be too hard to  
implement if you can't be bothered to prune old backups occasionally.  
But otherwise, it rocks!
