The wiki prepends this to the example:
\setuppapersize[A5][A5]
\setupexternalfigures[location={local,default}]
\setupbodyfont[8pt]
\setupcolors[state=start]

The important line is the \setupbodyfont, because that is what makes the
text fit in the columns. With the default font size, many of the lines in the
third column are overfull, and that triggers the empty line (which might be
considered a bug, but you should not have overfull lines either)
