actually a mkii-ish macro so one can as wel l use
\scratchdimen\widthofstring{abc}
if you doubt if something is a dimen, use \todimension

\todimension{10pt + ex + \WhatIsThis}
\toscaled{10pt + ex + \WhatIsThis}
