Sorry, I can’t see it. I tried different fonts and the older installation of COW as well as my current one. I measured the scaled up letters and find them as rectangular as on a straight line.

The font in the ConTeXt example doesn't change the shape of the letters but the one in your link does. While the changes in the mentioned font involve more than my simplified version, the shape change is the main point to have a nicer look of the text along the curved path.
