I did try purging the *.tuc files first. And for files like the MWE, the
command context --purgeall cleans up all the cluttered tuc files. As a
result, the MWE now works and the compilation displays the bibliographic
references at the bottom of the page and at the end of the document.
However, the command mtxrun --script cache --erase returns the
following: mtxrun | unknown script “mtx-context.lua” or
“mtx-mtx-context.lua”. This prevents the source file from being compiled.

Did you try "context --purgeall" (i.e. delete all generated files) and
maybe delete the cache with "mtxrun --script cache --erase".
