Jens Geyer created THRIFT-6349:
----------------------------------

             Summary: Drop the ubuntu-focal build image
                 Key: THRIFT-6349
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-6349
             Project: Thrift
          Issue Type: Task
          Components: Build Process
            Reporter: Jens Geyer

The {{build/docker/ubuntu-focal}} image can no longer be built, and Ubuntu
20.04 is past its standard support:

* Ubuntu 20.04 LTS left standard support on 2025-05-31; only the paid Ubuntu
Pro ESM continues.
* {{ppa:ondrej/php}} no longer publishes packages for focal. Its focal index
has not changed since 2025-06-09 and lists no packages. The Dockerfile installs
PHP from that PPA, so the build fails at that step for every PHP version (8.1
on master, 8.2 with THRIFT-6334).
* No CI job builds the images under {{build/docker}}, so nothing notices. The
Docker Hub tag {{thrift/thrift-build:ubuntu-focal}} was last updated in
February 2023.

Drop the image:
* remove {{build/docker/ubuntu-focal}};
* remove focal from {{build/docker/README.md}}: the column in the tool version
tables, the "Supported Containers" list, and the examples that use
{{ubuntu-focal}};
* update the remaining references: {{.travis.yml}} ({{dist: focal}}, the
default {{DISTRO=ubuntu-focal}}, and the focal docker and autotools jobs;
Travis CI no longer reports on this repository) and the comment in
{{lib/perl/build-cpan-dist.sh}}.

All images are LTS releases. The next one is Ubuntu 26.04 LTS "resolute"
(released 2026-04-23, now at 26.04.1, standard support until 2031);
{{ubuntu:26.04}} and {{buildpack-deps:resolute-scm}} exist on Docker Hub.
Adding it is a separate change.

_Drafted with AI assistance (Claude Opus 5); filed on behalf of Jens Geyer._
