If I understood the original post, the user did post code to do this, so it 
sounded like some of the work had already been done. This is a useful feature 
for some current uses cases, as well as many in the past (see the navy/purple 
line in the example). I deal a lot with scientific data, where you are often 
comparing line graphs like this with missing data where resampling or adding a 
fake datapoint can lead to erroneous conclusions. Having one line, in one 
place,  not connected (like the example) is usually easily interpretable, but 
when   there is 3-4 or more, it quickly becomes challenging.
