Please trim away.

I've amended the branch above with the latest. All that's missing at this 
point are the assertion tests. Which I'll implement in the next few days 
(wife probably wouldn't like me doing this on Christmas ;-). Currently all 
tests are passing that were passing on master. Please let me know if 
there's anything else you'd expect to see.
