Haven't been too happy with Heroku, EC2. Linode is highly recommended. We use Fabric + Cuisine + Bash scripts. It takes a good weekend to learn how to deploy nginx, haproxy, node, redis ... Other provisioning alternatives include Chef Solo and the one to watch for Ansible.
