You need to be more clear on what you are trying to do so we can help you. Draw a diagram or something with the details.
You can use authentication and use that to protect and use at the same time but again, you have left out some critical details as to what you are tying to accomplish. Nginx is powerful, you can write rules to do almost anything, but first you need to figure out what you want to do.
