That decade of experience has led to network administration with Solaris
reaching the breaking point (pre-dladm).  I don't want to go back there.

Unquestionably, ndd was a mess. But just yanking the rug out from NIC driver developers, customers, and PAE doesn't sound like a good solution either.

Ideally we'd like to build the system such that it didn't need to be tuned and automatically performaned well in or tuned itself for every environment in which it is placed...

But I don't believe that this is practical. There will always be corner cases that will need, even if it is just a small percentage of customers who need it.
