Wait -- new developments!  You are right, it wasn't that code
at all.  I've concluded (after a very confusing two hours) that
I gave you the wrong information, and here's the reason:

My machine works correctly after exactly every *other* reboot.
I just tried rebooting it a dozen times (warm) and I get that
MAC address error from the chip on every other reboot.

So, that's why reverting that patch seemed to fix the problem,
but it actually didn't:  every other change I made seemed to
fix the problem, but didn't.

However, that gives me the important clue that the problem
commit must have been made a day or so earlier than 3-22,
because that was the kernel I was running when I rebooted
and saw the error for the first time.  (I remember thinking
that tg3 was seeing a lot of changes in a short time.)

Can you think of which of those recent changes might be
a likely candidate?
