Client mode in the Devicescape stack has never been used with such a device. Yes, an option for the the low-level driver to configure it capabilities (or well, missing capabilities) should be added to allow hardware/firmware processing of various management tasks like association. I could try to do this for Prism2/2.5/3 which takes care of management frame processing in client mode.
