Given that this thread started out as a query re. a "really nasty 
attack," and resulted in:
5 on-topic responses (2 of which also commented on "guys")
>20 responses re. "guys" (I stopped counting)
It occurs to me that maybe "morons" or "idiots" might be an appropriate 
gender-neutral framing.
