hello everyone. after much reading (mike, thanks again for the links) and playing with the .asoundrc file i have the following situation. aplay, alsaplayer, xine and mplayer all work. mythtv no longer complains about the audio, but i still do not get any sound. i have the remote frontend using ALSA:mixed-analog as the output device and mixed-analog for the mixer. i am left wondering if the video stream from the backend contains audio? is there some way to check this? if i run mythfrontend on the backend server the audio works fine (although volume seems a little low).
regards,

daryl

hello everyone. i am replying to myself because somehow i managed to miss Mike's reply form yesterday, which i have only just run across while googling for further information on this topic. Mike, thanks for your reply. i have been reading up on the asoundrc file, yet i am still not sure what the format is used by the backend recording that i need to have alsa on the remote frontend convert to. how do i find this out?

Doesn't matter, really, although your recording profiles specify the parameters (unless you're using DVB/ATSC).

i am thinking
what i need to do is set the buffer_time value and maybe other attributes in the asoundrc file, does this sound right?

No. You want to do automatic conversion--especially for the default device.

It's all explained there, but you have to do your part and read it... ;)
