MySQL isn't running because it's installed to run as user mysql (as it
should be), but that user doesn't exist on your system. Check the docs
for your distro to ensure you are installing it properly and perhaps try
a re-install. Assuming you're using some sort of package manager, it
should have taken care of all this "extra work" during the install.
