Sorry to jump in on the Xine front - I started with MPlayer but as you
say the DVD support is great.
So I've switched to Xine, but all I get is the Xine startup screen - it
doesn't do anything else...
What options did you put on it? Or how did you set it up?

Pete, I started using mplayer, but it doesn't support dvd menus and it
doesn't work so well with a remote controll.
I started using xine as it support dvd menus AND it works really well with
lirc. (:
