The first softmod I did was tricky because there are so many versions of the XBox (1.0 through 1.6) and various methods and installers that can be used. Compounding all of this was the facts that the documentation out there ranges wildly in terms of dates and that makes it even more confusing. But once you've done the softmod on one XBox, it gets much less intimidating from there. The thing I like about a softmod is that you can always revert back to an unmodified state without having to worry about damaging anything inside the XBox. Even if you go wrong, there are tools that will restore the HDD to a factory state. However, softmods probably do take longer to apply than using a chip. I've never soldered a chip myself.
