If you have a fast enough CPU, then you can play DVDs
on the PVR-350. I have done it on an Athlon XP 2400+,
and although xine was telling me that it was dropping
frames, I wasn't noticing anything.

Myself, I'm using a 5200 now. As for the reasons on
recommendations on the 5200 - my guess is two things:
1. It's not as powerful a chip, thus doesn't generate
as much heat, so you can get fanless 5200 cards (I
have one, with a heatsink on it). I don't know if you
can get a 5500 or 5700 without a fan.
2. It's cheaper than a 5500 or 5700.

Unless you're using this machine for MythTV as your
primary workstation and/or doing 3D intensive tasks,
then the 5200 should be fine.
