I configured gdm to automaticall login mythtv and then
start mythfrontend inside /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.  You
may want to start it from the console for debugging,
it's up to you. I find it easier to have mythfrontend
log to a file. My xinitrc looks like this

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

xset -dpms s off
xhost +
xvattr -a XV_COLORKEY -v 0
/usr/local/bin/mythfrontend -l /var/log/mythfront
