I updated to current CVS [Fri Feb 18] having seen a commit addressing
end-of-buffer limits.  Although the cut bar display is still peculiarly
out-of-sync, the crash problem I described above has gone away.

I've took some digital camera captures of the odd bar behaviour.  If
anyone wants them, just ask me off-list.
