There are many ways they can screw you if they want to do timestamps.
First of all, the tuners get independent time feeds from certain TV channels
to set their clock.  If they are using your system clock, they can
insist it be monotonic -- you would not be able to watch shows in any
other order than their airing order.   You could not seek or fast
forward if they wanted to stop that.

So generally, they can make it so difficult you would give up your
open source "record the encrypted stream" recorder for a locked recorder
that has their blessing.

They don't want to stop you from fast forwarding (well, the advertisers
do) but they do want you to buy their locked PVR and not use Myth.
