Well, I used ASUS version of the 5200 with active cooling and let me tell you – its noise was _far_ from "minor". Actually, I had to buy a new cooling kit for it as the noise level was intolerable (for me).
I second that.
My Asus FX5200 also has a very loud fan. But I noticed that the GPU did not get hot at all (30-35 degrees centigrade or so), so I thought "Oh, what the hell" and yanked the fan power cord out. It's been working fine ever since, about 6 months now, and it's still luke warm when running.
YMMV, definitely.
