hey guys,

I'm overwhelmed by links that I've been finding. I wanted to seek recommendation please.

FYI, the system will be linux.

1. What card should I use to capture regular channels?
2. What card should I use to capture hdtv signals(OTA is fine)?
3. What software should I use to record those signals to my harddisk?
4. What card should I use to playback the recorded to my HDTV set?

Thanks guys,

Neil

Hi Neil,

There is a searchable archive for this list at:

This is one of those questions that have been beaten to death. But here
are some answers to your questions:

1. For standard definition tv I would highly recommend a Hauppauge
PVR-250 or PVR-350. The 250 is strictly an mpeg-2 encoder. You will
also need a graphics card with tv out (see 4). If you want HDTV you
probably won't want the 350 because it's mpeg-2 decoder only works with
the built in s-video out and won't do Hi-def.

2. I don't record HDTV, but the pcHDTV HD-3000 is the only one I've
seen being used on this list.

3. MythTV of course :)

4. I'd go with a good quality Nvidia card with DVI out (assuming your
set has a DVI input).

As a side note the pcHDTV HD-3000 will capture the Over-the-Air HDTV
signal just fine, but you will need a pretty recent processor on your
frontend to display it. (Think P4 3.0 ghz or XP3200+)

Hi Wayne,

I'm trying to recall back what I have gathered before. Going back, if I will be buying the PVR-350 for recording regular broadcast, will it allow me to display the recorded show on my television using one of the tv-out ports? Is it also possible to watch live off-the-air broadcast via the mythtv to my television even without recording it first?

Thanks

Neil
